Some people suggest that they date back to Ancient Greece, however, the first concrete evidence pins this ancient device in 1704 when "Girya" (meaning kettlebells) was published by a Russian lexicographer who wrote "upon occasion, these weights were used to weigh grains or other goods, and vendors started swinging them to show off their power". They quickly recognised the physical benefits, and this Ancient form of working out is still going strong to this day.
